Systems
In many of the works, my physical engagement is an urgent aspect of the art. These are lick-the-ground performative systems designed to ingest sensory and conceptual data like stray notes on a music sheet, pulling them back into a lyrical logic of a new form.
The pieces are highly rigorous in their procedures. The physicality of the resulting artwork is underscored by my immediate involvement with its fabrication. I often learn a technique or skill in order to accomplish a piece. The work combines both high- and low-tech processes, and the metaphor of each material is given the highest reverence.

Equidistant 1996 (Bangkok version 2002) I envisioned concentric circles drawn upon the Los Angeles with the La Brea Tar Pits as the center point. Each point on each circle has its counterpoint that is equidistant to the center, and each time I photographed both sites. Though I could select the original site by choice or seduction, its sister site was always dictated by the location of the first. |

Charting
the Getty Collection
2000 I was asked to create an informal lecture for the Artist Talk at the Getty. I decided to chart the content of the Getty collection on view. I counted elements ranging from missing limbs to jewelry. I hired my daughter and her friend to count mortals for 5¢ a person. |

| Mountain Wedge 1985-87 The San Gabriel Mountains could be seen at the top of Broadway in this photograph if the air was clean. After seeing this wedge of mountain once, I decided to photograph every day until I could see it again. The resulting sculpture includes 14 months of this desire.

| Pilgrimage to the Wedge September 10, 1987 Departure time:
7:49 AM --2nd&Broadway I walked from my studio to the Mountain Wedge to try to capture a clear photo of it on a smoggy day. I walked as the crow flies. I cut through yards and houses, and the urbanscape obstacles.
